Our name

Wildehonde is Afrikaans for African Wild Dogs, one of the continent’s most endangered predators, listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Fewer than 6,600 remain in the wild. Their fate is a bellwether for African conservation, and we carry their name with intent.

Big Five, Little Five

The Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, lion) are the animals every safari brochure sells. WildeHonde covers them, but we cover the Little Five just as often. The Little Five are the harder-to-spot species that share the bushveld: the elephant shrew, ant lion, buffalo weaver, rhinoceros beetle, and leopard tortoise. They are named to echo the big ones, but they are the animals a slow observer actually finds. Our first Species Spotlight covers the leopard tortoise.

How we work

Stories are drafted with AI assistance from trusted sources, then reviewed by a human before publishing. Every post carries a Verified by human badge. We do not run auto-published, unreviewed content, wildlife reporting is too important to get wrong.
